The British actor - who has battled alcoholism and drug addiction - plays drunken millionaire playboy Arthur Bach in the remake of the popular 1981 film and wanted to make his scenes as realistic as possible.
Director Jason Winer explained: 'He sniffs alcohol to give himself a sense memory of what those days were like. Russell's been sober for years so we're not worried.'"
